The United States wanted California and used the (alleged) mistreatment of U.S. citizens in California as a pretext to go to war. As a result of the war, the U.S. got California, Arizona, Utah and parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. In addition, in Texas, the Rio Grande became the border between the US and Mexico.
