about
Ancient Rome
Question:
What festivals and holidays did the Romans celebrate?
Answer:
To honor their gods the Romans gave public festivals. Some festivals were paid for in full by the Roman government. Others were funded by wealthy patricians, to promote their business or themselves during an election period, and to honor the gods. Festivals were free (except for those who paid for them.) Festivals were fun and colorful, with streamers and banners. There were plays and street performers and games and food. There were so many gods that it seemed like there was a festival almost every night. In the course of these festivals some customs have come down through the ages that we still use today.
