A simplified answer is that Julius Caesar was a Roman soldier. He became a victorious general while in Spain, and fought in other distant parts of the Republic. His soldiers followed him because he won. Julius Caesar had his army follow him into Italy. He said that he was going to end the civil wars and bring law and order back Rome.
