There are many reasons why the Roman Republic was so successful and grew so large. First, the Romans were tough soldiers. Each soldier believed that they were fighting to defend their homes and Rome itself. Second, they allowed the people they defeated to join the Roman Republic and become citizens themselves. Third, they adopted the best beliefs, customs, and achievements of any people they came in contact with and made them part of Rome’s beliefs and achievements (Greek learning, Roman and Greek gods, etc) Fourth, they built roads to connect every part of the area they conquered with the rest of Rome; that made trade and living easier wherever they went. Finally, they ensured Roman laws were applied to every citizen wherever they went (making the people they conquered want to be citizens of Rome). The Roman Republic
