Harlem, a large neighborhood in New York City, became a Mecca for African American artists and musicians. Many great musicians played in Harlem nightclubs. Places like the Cotton Club had large numbers of white Americans mixing with African Americans, both of whom came to see the performances of people like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
