Why was Bunker Hill important?

During the siege of Boston, the Colonials placed men on top of the hills outside of Boston.  If they could get cannon to the tops of these hills then the British would have to leave Boston.  The British knew this and sent troops to capture the hills.  The colonials fought gallantly but lost.  The saying, "Don't shoot until you see the white of their eyes” came from this battle.
