What was a woman's role in the Maya Empire?

Show Answer

Maya women were not limited to the care of hearth, home, and children. Maya women participated in government, politics, economics, and farming. They helped ready their men for battle, although women were not warriors themselves. They played an active part in Maya religion, and were responsible for the care of domestic shrines. Farmers wives made the family clothes by weaving, spinning, embroidering, and sewing. Women, like men, with very few exceptions, were restricted to the social level into which they were born.
