There were three social classes in ancient Rome - the patricians, the plebians and the slaves. A plebian or pleb (sometimes spelled plebe) was a common person in ancient Rome. Both men and women were plebs. Some plebs were quite successful. Some were rich. But if they were not born into one of the old aristocratic families, they remained plebs no matter how rich they became. Roman Social Class: Plebs & Patricians, Slaves
