Jazz music originated in the southern US. It moved north and was changed by and adapted by white musicians. White middle class people began to listen to jazz on the radio. Radio programs, that were just becoming widespread, helped spread the popularity of Jazz. Jazz was  played in nightclubs as well as on the radio. Jazz was easy to listen to and dance to. This was the first time that a quickly appearing and rapidly spread popular music became important anywhere in the world.  The Roaring 20s
